How to Know if a Diamond Is Real

Home checks can give clues, but they cannot guarantee authenticity. The safest way is a professional test or a verified certificate from a trusted laboratory. Some diamond simulants, such as moissanite or cubic zirconia, can look very similar to diamonds without the right equipment.

Ask for the report number and verify it directly on the lab website. This is the most reliable first step.
Look for Laser Inscription
Many certified diamonds have a microscopic inscription on the girdle. It should match the certificate number.
Professional Diamond Tester
A jeweler can use thermal and electrical conductivity testing to separate diamond from many common simulants.
Gemologist Inspection
For full confidence, ask a qualified jeweler or gemologist to inspect the stone and compare it to the certificate.
Avoid Risky Home Tests
Do not use scratch tests or harsh methods. They can damage jewelry and still do not prove authenticity. Fog, water, and newspaper tests are common online, but they are not professional proof. Use them only as rough clues, not as final confirmation.
