Diamond 4Cs Guide
Learn the four qualities that shape a diamond: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.
Every diamond is evaluated through four important qualities: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Together, they help explain how a diamond looks, how rare it is, and how it is valued. At Signature Jewelry, we use the 4Cs as a guide, but we also look at the beauty of the diamond in real light — because a certificate explains quality, while the eye confirms beauty.
The Sparkle Factor
Cut
Cut describes how well a diamond is shaped and polished. It affects brilliance, fire, and sparkle more than any other C. For maximum sparkle, we recommend choosing Excellent or Very Good cut grades whenever possible.
The Whiter, The Rarer
Color
Diamond color is graded from D to Z. D is the most colorless and rare, while lower grades can show warmer yellow or brown tones. For many customers, G-H color offers a beautiful near-colorless look with excellent value.
Natural Characteristics
Clarity
Clarity describes the tiny natural marks inside or on a diamond. These are called inclusions and blemishes. Many inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, which is why VS and SI diamonds can often be beautiful choices when selected carefully.
Weight, Not Just Size
Carat
Carat is the weight of the diamond. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look different in size depending on their shape, cut, and proportions.
